Movember

Well as most of you will now know I'm participating in Movember which is a fundraiser for men's health. We have convinced about 10 guys in the hostel to do it as well. Some of which haven't shaved in years so to see them clean cut all on the same day was very funny.

I'll post up a picture or two once I get a chance but basically you need to shave on the first of November and then grow and maintain a moe for all of Novemeber. Not to hard I guess but it is giving us something to do.

Here is the link to the official site if any of you feel like sponsoring me. http://www.movember.com/uk/sponsor, enter my Rego number which is 33671 and your credit card details

More posts to follow.

Jess and Stew

I left Mickey in Budapest to go and meet Jess and Stew in Croatia.

I was ment to meet them in Split on Tuesday but due to my random travel planning technique (ie not realising what day it was) I found myself in Slpit on Monday. That is cool, I'll just cruise around Split and see some stuff before they get here.

So I get a room in the old quater from a very nice old lady who through herself at me at the train station, before I had even stepped of the train. The place was clean and it was only me in it which was nice after months of dorm rooms. Anyway first thing first off to find some food and a beer.

Out the door, down the street. Turn right up towards the closest shops. Then I hear it. Screaming. I'm thinking this is bad, what is going on. But it was ok. It was just the Parsonators (aka Jess and Stew) sitting down at a cafe less than a block from where I was staying. It turns out they came to Split early, hadn't got any of my text messages and had managed to pick a place just 2 blocks from where I was staying.

It truley is a small world after all.

Nuclear Bomb Shelter

Well I have finally done it. I've danced in all night in a nuclear bomb shelter in Bratislava. I can't say that it was one of the things that I had down on my I "Must do whilst I'm traveling list", but lets face it who would.

It started with Mickey and I looking around the city and seeing all these posters for a thing called Vienna Calling. We can't speak or read Slovak so we just had to assume that it was for a big night some where. Took one of the posters back to the hostel and asked the front desk if they knew where it was. The guy looked at us and said. That is the "Sub Club" it is one of the best clubs in town. Always like to hear that from the hostel dudes.

So we go, to the opera that is. That is the perfect pre dance night event to attend. It was great. Much to Mickey's disgust I can't actually remember what opera it was but is was a Tchaikovsky. We were sitting in a box, for all of 5 euros each (and yes we pretended to be the guys form the Muppet show).

Post Opera a quick bite to eat then off to the club. At this point we had no idea that it was an old bomb shelter. We get a bit lost but then we find it. What can I say it was built into the side of a mountain, almost over grown by trees, One large door, military style was the entrance. Still didn't click that it was a bomb shelter.

Pay the cover. Down the tunnel perhaps 5 m long and only wide enough to walk 2 side by side, Large metal door turn right, turn into the next tunnel, 10m long lit from the ground by 6 foot red fluro tubes. Turn left, pass through 2 more large metal doors. Then you are there. Two large tunnels and a bar. I'll post the photos when I get a chance. The music was pumping so we got some drinks and sat down at a table.

Then we meet the coolest guys ever. Tibor, Lubo and Boris they spent a year in Australia in 2000. They loved Australia and we loved them. That is when we finally found out where we actually where. Renovated bomb shelter, awesome.

Well then rest of the night became an orgy of drugs, alcohol and dancing. The club closed and Tibor took us back to his place to watch the sunrise over the Danube. What can I say it was a great night and I recommend dancing in nuclear bomb shelters to everyone.

Sorry it has been a while

Well I'm sorry that it has been a while. I've been to Germany went to Munich, Berlin and Hamburg, they were all great. Berlin was really interesting. To be in a place with so much history was very moving and something that I don't think that I'll never forget.

Then I headed back to Scotland for a week and headed to the fringe Festival. Massive. Saw Radiohead supported by Beck it was all that I could have hoped for and more. Radiohead played creep, and Beck had a puppet show on stage which was an exact copy of the actual band. A little hard to explain but there is Photos that I'll try and get online soon.

After the festival stayed in Edinburgh for another couple of days before heading to Prague to meet back up with Mickey. Prague was beautiful, romantic and hot. I've been so lucky with the weather. After doing a bike ride of the city I got a tip on a club just out of town that was described as "industrial". That is one way to describe it. The other is it was like the inside of the ship in the Matrix. Fucking Awesome.

That is about it for now. Heading to Bratislava and then down to Croatia and hopefully meet up with Jess ans Stew there then on to see mum in Italy.

I took it in my stride though and didn't let it go to my head, I made sure I thanked God (like all good winners do, especially Americans) and then proceded to drink a lot of spirits. Just to try and complete the holy Trinity. Needless to say by the end of the night i may or may not have been speaking in tongues.

Not sure when I'll get a chance to post the video up. But for those of you that know me well the 'Drop the pressure' by Mylo makes me do some crazy man dancing.

Well Mickey and I made it to Winchester to Sally's place and one of many highlights of our time there was driving around in her soft-top, through the English country side, not a cloud in the sky and Mylo in the CD player. Could have been a perfect day.

Cheese Rolling

Well Mickey and I went to the cheese rolling in Gloucester. It was truly mental. Basically people through themselves down a hill after a piece of cheese.

I've got a video that I've uploaded to the google video and I'll link to it once it has been verified.

I didn't know that humans and tennis balls had so much in common but it turns out they both bounce higher than you might think.

Where's Wally ? (Dubai edition)

Well I know whey Royal Brunei was the cheapest tickets I could get. They do everything manually.

That was fine until we got to Dubai and they lost a person. First there was the manual recount by the man in the red jacket. Then the man in the blue jacket came and counted. Still not happy the man in the gray jacket had a go. Then they got us all of the plane, recount. It was clear at this point something was wrong, and we were told that we were missing a person. What is the solution to a Missing Person Royal Brunei Style?

That right pull out all of our luggage on to the tarmac and sent us down in groups of ten to identify our bags which can then placed back on the plan, and with Wally's stuff (I've called the missing person Wally for the sake of the story) we could finally fly off. What do they say it isn't the destination it is the getting there.

I'm here safe and sound. Cheers dc

7 More Sleeps

This is my first blog entry that I've tried from the online word processor Writely. It seems to be very cool. As a nerd that generally struggles with spelling at the best of times I suspect that this might be my preferred way of making blog entries. Now grammar only I have to worry about.

It is only 7 more sleeps until I leave. I think that I'm finally starting to get a little excited. I still have very little plans for over there so far they include
  1. Mickey and I doing some very bad UK accent work
  2. Meeting Jess and Stew in France and pretending I'm in the Helgas add
  3. Go Couch Surfing and meet a bunch of cool new people

Why you shouldn't Google yourself

Well in a moment of insanity I Googled myself. As it turns out Daivd Conroy is quiet boring, but hidden away in google’s memory was this little piece of gold. From my time at UWS School of Computing.

When 15 equals 5

Well the story is even cooler now. On Friday 28th a parcel arrived at my old house. And yes it was my visa, processed and returned in 5 working days. Annoying but that is the last of the paper work that needs to be finalised.

The list of haves is looking much better:
  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Travel Insurance
  • Bag (Sleeping and Backpack style)
  • Camera (Canon ixus 750, Very happy with it so far)
  • iPod
So now it is just a battle between me and old father time. 18 more sleeps Damn you father time, damn you.

Lassie Faire not the best approach to travel planning

Wow, so on Friday I found out that the UK High Commission is, as of 4 weeks ago, no longer doing same day Visa processing. What does that mean I hear you all shout? Well it means that I'm now have to wait 15 working days for my Visa to arrive.

With a 5th of May departure already book. That would mean my Visa will arrive 5 working days after I was meant to fly out. Perhaps not the best plan in the world to leave it to the last minute.

So now I 'm flying out on May 22nd. But Beef Strudel is still on and I'm looking forward to seeing you there.
